Momzelle dans le Elle Québec !

Thursday, January 28th, 2010

Breastfeeding Poem – Dr. Seuss Style

Monday, January 25th, 2010

Here is a very cute breastfeeding advocacy poem  in the Dr. Seuss style of Green Eggs and Ham. It made me smile, let me know if it does the same to you!

Dr. Seuss for Nursing Moms

Would you nurse her in the park?
Would you nurse him in the dark?
Would you nurse him with a Boppy?
And when your boobs are feeling floppy?

I would nurse him in the park,
I would nurse her in the dark.
I’d nurse with or without a Boppy.
Floppy boobs will never stop me.

Can you nurse with your seat belt on?
Can you nurse from dusk till dawn?
Though she may pinch me, bite me, pull,
I will nurse her `till she’s full!

Can you nurse and make some soup?
Can you nurse and feed the group?
It makes her healthy strong and smart,
Mommy’s milk is the best start!

Would you nurse him at the game?
Would you nurse her in the rain?
In front of those who dare complain?
I would nurse him at the game.
I would nurse her in the rain.

As for those who protest lactation,
I have the perfect explanation.
Mommy’s milk is tailor made
It’s the perfect food, you need no aid.

Some may scoff and some may wriggle,
Avert their eyes or even giggle.
To those who can be cruel and rude,
Remind them breast’s the perfect food!

I would never scoff or giggle,
Roll my eyes or even wiggle!
I would not be so crass or crude,
I KNOW that this milk’s the perfect food!

We make the amount we need
The perfect temp for every feed.
There’s no compare to milk from breast-
The perfect food, above the rest.

Those sweet nursing smiles are oh so sweet,
Mommy’s milk is such a treat.
Human milk just can’t be beat.
I will nurse, in any case,
On the street or in your face.

I will not let my baby cry,
I’ll meet her needs, I’ll always try.
It’s not about what’s good for you,
It’s best for babies, through and through.

I will nurse her in my home,
I will nurse her when I roam.
Leave me be lads and ma’am.
I will nurse her, Mom I am.

Pool breastfeeder gets apology

Thursday, January 21st, 2010

Kuddos to Cinira Longuinho, who did not accept to be thrown out of a privately owned swimming pool because she was breastfeeding her daughter in the water. She was asked to leave by the owner on the basis ofprovincial regulations prohibiting food and/or drinks in or around pools. The matter was brought to the Ontario’s Human Rights Tribunal and the owner of the Newmarket pool, Ellie Karkouti, had to apologise and agreed to donate $2000 to a women shelter as well as post signs stating that breastfeeding is allowed in and around the water. The provincial regulations are still unclear for pool owners, but this case should make it clearer. Women ARE allowed to breastfeed and babies are allowed to be breastfeed in and around swimming pools !

This case is very similar to one that happened in Quebec public swimming pool a few months ago, and where the mother also received (on top of a financial compensation) the apology of the city and got breastfeeding positive signs posted at the city’s facilities. Public breastfeeding needs to be encouraged and the right to do so has to be protected. Big thanks to the women who stand for their rights, it is empowering for all other women !

I’m also glad to say that this news made it to the second page of the Toronto Star on Saturday, January 16, 2010.

Momzelle Turtleneck Black

A Dreamy Vision by Tolstoy

Monday, January 18th, 2010

So peaceful and calm; I’m back with the Monday’s breastfeeding quote. For me, reading this has the effect of stopping the sounds of traffic and all other city noise. Let’s start this week on the right foot !

She pictured a child, her own—like the baby she had seen the day before in the arms of her old nurse’s daughter—at her own breast, with her husband standing by and gazing fondly at her and the child.

—Tolstoy. War and Peace. Book I, part 3, chapter 3

Maybe on another planet

Monday, January 11th, 2010

I just read over the International Code of Marketing of Breastmilk Substitutes and I am shocked. Once again. I will copy here the article 5, intitled “The general public and mothers”:

5.1 There should be no advertising or other form of promotion to the general public of products within the scope of this Code (my note: these include breastmilk substitutes, including infant formula; other milk products; feeding bottles and teats).

5.2. Manufacturers and distributors should not provide, directly or indirectly, to pregnant women, mothers or members of their families, samples of products within the scope of this Code.

5.3. In conformity with paragraphs 1 and 2 of this Article, there should be no point-of-sale advertising, giving of samples, or any other promotion device to induce sales directly to the consumer at the retail level, such as special displays, disount coupons, premiums, special sales, loss-leaders and tie-in sales, for products within the scope of this Code. This provision should not restrict the establishment of pricing policies and practices intended to provide products at lower prices on a long-term basis.

5.4 Manufacturers and distributors should not distribute to pregnant women or mothers of infants and young children any gifts of articles or utensils which may promote the use of breastmilk substitutes or bottle-feeding.

5.5 Marketing personnel, in their business capacity, should not seek direct or indirect contact of any kind with pregnant women or with mothers of infants and young children.

I knew this, but the marketing of breastmilk substitutes is so all over the place that after a while I tend to forget the code and accept the marketing of breastmilk substitutes as almost normal. For example, I was at the gym this weekend and saw a mom with an infant who was carrying a backpack with the BabyNestlé logo on it. Part of me was saying, oh, that’s nice, a free backpack. And another was saying: NO, IT IS NOT NICE. There is a good reason why “presents” from the formula companies are forbidden by the WHO International Code of Marketing of Breastmilk Substitutes, and it is the same reason why the formula companies give them away: freebies from the formula companies interfere with the protection and promotion of breastfeeding.

A "free" backpack that comes at a high price

A "free" backpack that comes at a high price

I wonder when the governments who have signed the WHO Code will abide by it (as a reminder, Canada signed it in 1981).

Debate: Should Women Breastfeed in Public?

Wednesday, January 6th, 2010

Really cool breastfeeding debate, with Elizabeth Pantley and Nicki Heskin sharing their point of view on the question. However, both the pro and the con say that women should breastfeed in public, so it makes you want to vote for both ! Women do need our support and yes, of course they should breastfeed in public !

Have fun casting your vote : http://www.answerbag.com/debates/women-breastfeed-public_1855529
