Mother-child Themed Novel Nominated for Man Booker Prize

Thursday, October 21st, 2010

Wow! There are days like this one when I am very happy to subscribe to so many e-newsletters (the content below is from Infact Canada, a great organization that does lots to support breastfeeding mothers, which is why I left in place the “donate now” button…). Congratulations to Emma Donoghue for her novel and her nomination for the prestigious Man Booker Prize. Now I know what I am going to read this weekend!

Room novel cover

Room is an amazing novel of love and survival of a mother and her child living under the darkest of circumstances.

Room by Emma Donoghue, is a must read for all involved in the breastfeeding movement. Her book Room nominated for worlds most prestigious book award, the Man Booker Prize in literature, is about a five year old boy, Jack and his mother who are held captive in a small room with no access to the outside world. Told from the voice of Jack, born in this extraordinary prison, is a powerful story of love between a mother and her child; about a mother who creates an imaginative life full of fun and invention with her child in the room and where having some – sometimes the left or sometimes the right – plays a key role in this unique relationship.

Emma Donoghue, born in Ireland, has two children and lives in London, Ontario.

Thank you for nursing in public + advice to men

Tuesday, October 19th, 2010

I stumbled across these cards this morning and I think they are fantastic. The two ladies at the head of this blog about kindness dig for beautiful and simple expressions of love, respect and kindness. Looking at the images and reading the poems they post is enough to make you feel like a better person. I really like that one of the acts of kindness that they suggest is to give one these free downloadable cards to a nursing mom. Have you ever received one? Would you consider offering one?

Advice to men who see a woman nursing in public

This actually reminds me of a guy I met not too long ago. He asked me very genuinely what he should be doing when he sees a woman breastfeeding in public, as he felt uncomfortable and did not know what was appropriate. He did not want to be offensive by looking at her, but also did not want to make her feel like she was doing something wrong by quickly looking away. I suggested to him to look at the mother in the eyes (acknowledge), smile briefly (approve), then do whatever he was about to do. What do you think of my answer?

Hooray for nursing moms!

Friday, October 8th, 2010

“Hooray for nursing moms!”  is one of the numerous comments I received after Reuters, the news agency, published an article + video + entrepreneurial journal about Momzelle on their website. It made me think: merely by existing and by catering exclusively to nursing mothers, Momzelle promotes breastfeeding. This is one of the greatest feelings ever: to know that you’ve started a business that is actually promoting positive change in the society. Many thanks to Jon Cook from Reuters for contacting me and to Nathalie Armstrong for writing such a great article.

A Toronto mom, Michelle, breastfeeds her toddler on the video and I believe that’s awesome.
