Nursing where? Anywhere.  I am not a breastfeeding mom yet (still have six months to go in my first pregnancy), but I feel very involved in the breastfeeding world.  I am surrounded by friends and family that have made breastfeeding the norm for me. Given their positive experiences, I can’t wait to experience it myself.  I know I will breastfeed in public: it seems unavoidable unless I want to stay in the house for six months.  And why should it be avoided? Unfortunately, I can’t help feel a little nervous of getting my first stare, or perhaps even glare.  I want to be proud to nurse my child in public, but even more I wish I didn’t even have to think about it at all.  It shouldn’t be an issue.

The more women breastfeed in public, the more normal it will be.  I want to feel comfortable doing it and that has to come from me.  It will be my attitude and confidence, knowing that I am doing the right thing, which will help me get over that first stare/glare.

I’m a shy girl.  I don’t like attracting attention.  But neither of these traits will deter me from breastfeeding in public.  I’ve been giving nursing shirts as baby shower presents for years.  I hear again and again stories of how discreet and easy a simple shirt can make this process. My friend Caro, one of my lucky gift recipients ;) , was at her husband’s softball game with her six week old son when she ran into a friend. “She didn’t even realize I was nursing while talking with her” my friend Caro was telling me the other day. There are other accessories for breastfeeding that encourage and facilitate breastfeeding in public as well; I am obviously partial to nursing shirts.  I think we should do whatever it takes to get us out there, nursing in public. I believe it should be normal, although apparently it’s not as there is news everyday of women being asked to leave places because of breastfeeding.  That has got to stop.

Breastfeeding Quote of the day

Monday, July 18th, 2011

I see my body as an instrument, rather than an ornament.

~Alanis Morissette, quoted in Reader’s Digest, March 2000

I am eleven weeks pregnant and now I get this quote.  Not that I feel I have to be one without the other…

Introducing Sara!

Monday, July 18th, 2011

Hello everyone! I am delighted to introduce Sara, the newest addition to the Momzelle team. Sara will be taking over the Momzelle social media initiatives. I will still be writing from time to time, but she will do most of the work. Sara grew up on a boat in the Caribbean and moved from Toronto to Montreal at the same time as Vincent, Momzelle and me. She is an early childhood educator and found out in June 2011 that she is pregnant with her first child. I’m really looking forward to reading her blog entries and follow her new adventures as she learns about breastfeeding and discovers the great world of mothering. Welcome, Sara!

N.B. Sara does have a history with Momzelle. She modelled some of our clothes last year. So here she is! :)

Moving sale!

Friday, May 20th, 2011

Momzelle is growing and moving to a new location – in Montreal. We are sad to leave Toronto, where we made some great friends and got to know the other business owners on the Dundas West strip (Beadle, Lula Lounge, the Atlantic restaurant, etc.), but we are looking forward to going back to our Quebec French roots, and to life and business in Montreal. The little storefront/distribution centre that we have in Toronto will not be in operation anymore as all of our activities will be transferred to Montreal (new address to be announced). It’s a big move for us and hopefully the transition will go smoothly. In the meanwhile, we would like to travel as lightly as possible so we are having a moving sale. For a limited time, there is 25% off on absolutely everything.

Wish us good luck with the move and enjoy the sale!

P.S. To all those of you that I got to meet in person, thank you for having made my time in Toronto such a pleasant one. I will miss you! Come visit Momzelle in Montreal! Bring the kids and nurse at the Biodôme, the Planetarium and the Botanical Garden…

New fancy nursing top + the perfect nursing dress to wear at a wedding!

Monday, January 24th, 2011

A fancy nursing top

About two weeks ago, we received a new nursing top. It is dressier than the tops we usually make, so we have decided to call it the “fancy nursing top“. It has 3/4 sleeves, a draped neck (you pull down the neckline – super easy – to access the breast), and it comes in two colours: black and electric blue. I’m not very good at colour naming, so you may also read “royal blue” in the product description. The fabric is 90% viscose and 10% spandex, so it has a nice stretch and a very soft hand. I believe this top would be perfect for special events, nights out at the restaurant with your beau (Valentine’s Day is coming soon…), or just to feel very pretty. We’ve already sold a lot of them, so hurry if you want one because it may take a little while before we receive a second batch!

A nursing dress to wear at a wedding

Yes, look no further, you have found the nursing dress you need for your sister-in-law’s wedding. Even if the knot at the side of the dress unties, your underwear will not show, it is a faux-wrap. The tie is there to make for a perfect fit and adds dimension to the dress. I love the way this dress falls. It is sexy without being too much because it does not cling to the body (although I would not wear heavy cotton briefs underneath… it may show!). I have seen women with very heavy breasts (double G) wear it and it was perfect. I have also seen women with smaller breasts wear it (me being one of them) and it did fit wonderfully too. The dress is made out of the same material as the fancy top (90% viscose and 10% spandex). It would be perfect to wear at a wedding, but it is also a wearable dress, which means that you can wear it more than once! I would totally wear it at a fancy occasion (graduation, wedding, anniversary). No one will know it is a nursing dress (but your baby will very easily access the milk supplies). One of the very good sides of this dress is that even if you have just given birth and still have the baby-tummy, this will not hug it at all. It is not only forgiving and it will make the best out of your curves. Of course, a black dress is always useful, but if you’re looking to add some colour to your wardrobe, the fushia dress is fabulous. It would brighten any winter day, and most probably flatter any kind of tan in the summer (having some kin with Snow White, I really would not know that, but I have a feeling that all darker skin tones would look amazing in it).
