I absolutely adored your blog entry! My son is 3 and a half and "still" nursing mainly to get to sleep at nap or at night. I've had to try hard not to cave to the judgment of family the uptight environment we moved to in Texas (like a foreign country in reverse to where my son was born in Los Angeles.)

Kudos to you! What kept me going was reading Our Babies, Ourselves: How Biology and Culture Shape the Way We Parent by Meredith Small.

WOW Shannon I can't believe a maternity hospital said that! I tried to breastfeed my then 3mos old at a hospital while waiting for an appointment, I was completely covered and off in a corner but they made me move to one of those hallways that is attached btwn 2 buildings and is above the road and it had no air conditioning in the middle of summer and both my baby girl and myself were sweating so bad she just couldn't eat and I thought it was absolutely ridiculous for a medical facility to act that way! A 9yo breastfeeding is still a little shocking to me but the way she talked about feeding in public is nice. I don't know if I could just whip the boobs out like that but I can say after breastfeeding my daughter this long she is 9mos I definitely have lost a lot of my modesty and I am not embarassed to feed her in front of friends and family, generally I only cover up if I think the other people are uncomfortable now.

What a great post Ruth! We need more stories like this in North America.
I thought we were doing better until I was asked to cover up at our local maternity hospital. We staged a nurse-in and it was great but wouldn't be lovely if we didn't have to protest for a basic human right :)

Wow! I wish I had read this article before I had my little Samara. She's 9 months today and I still can't believe I'm a mom!!! I've stuck to the breast feeding, but it was a struggle for the first 3 months or so (new mom). I was going to wean her soon because I was thinking of going back to work, but after reading this... I'm absolutely sure we're not ready for that now. We both love it too much.
