Ah, the joy of suckling! She lovingly watched the fishlike motions of the toothless mouth and she imagined that with her milk there flowed into her little son her deepest thoughts, concepts, and dreams.

Milan Kundera on Breastfeeding
Friday, May 27th, 2011Monday’s Breastfeeding Quote is Back!
Monday, April 18th, 2011It has been a while since I posted a Monday’s breastfeeding quote. This morning I was reading an article about how to help mothers feel good about breastfeeding in public (basically what Momzelle is all about!), and found this, with regards to what makes moms nurse for longer:
“The key to being successful is being able to nurse anywhere.”
Claire Latham, La Leche League leader and mother of two, Springfield, Va.
(as quoted on breastfeed.com)
We just came back from the BabyTime Show in Toronto and I often heard mothers say that they’d rather pump a bottle than nurse in public. Wouldn’t life be easier if they felt good about breastfeeding in public? Some moms have such a hard time pumping a bottle… Feeling good about breastfeeding in public is definitely a key factor to successful breastfeeding!

Breastfeeding on Valentine’s Day
Monday, February 14th, 2011Happy Valentine’s Day everyone! Here is the “loving quote” of the day:
Breastfeeding is an unsentimental metaphor for how love works, in a way. You don’t decide how much and how deeply to love – you respond to the beloved, and give with joy exactly as much as they want. ~Marni Jackson

Breastfeeding Quote of the day
Monday, September 27th, 2010Like. Like. Like. I wish I could be the one patting every breastfeeding mom on the back every time they nurse! It is so comforting to know that there are others to comfort and support you when you need it.
“In some cultures it is considered a child’s birthright to be nursed until the age of two. It is believed all your sins are forgiven when you nurse your baby, and an angel stands behind you and pats you on the back when you are done. I like to think of an angel standing behind me every time I nurse. It is a very comforting thought when things aren’t going well. If you can’t get support from your family, at least the angels are behind you.”

A wonderful gift: today’s breastfeeding quote
Monday, August 16th, 2010This morning I looked at an old issue of Today’s Parent magazine that was on my coffee table (I kept it because it gave great ideas about how to organize children’s birthday parties), and read about competition between mothers. The article seemed to consider “competitive” the fact to tell your child, when giving him an apple, that the word apple starts by the letter “A”. When I found today’s quote, I liked that it does not read breastfeeding is the “best” gift, but that breastfeeding is “a” gift.
Breastfeeding is a mother’s gift to herself, her baby and the earth.
Pamela K. Wiggins
Breastfeeding quote of the day
Monday, July 19th, 2010I do not know many mothers who have breastfed their children past the 3 year mark (I’m not talking about breastfeeding different children one after the other; I know some mothers who have been breastfeeding for six years or more!). Those who do so probably do not need to read the following quote, although a little tap in the back once in a while can be encouraging. So, for those who wonder if breastfeeding past “x” (fill in the number) month/year will is spoiling their child, this quote is for you. Everybody else, enjoy:
There is no upper limit to the duration of breastfeeding and no evidence of psychologic or developmental harm from breastfeeding into the third year of life or longer.
American Academy of Pediatrics

Sweeten your day with this breastfeeding quote
Tuesday, May 25th, 2010Really sweet!
“With his small head pillowed against your breast and your milk warming his insides, your baby knows a special closeness to you. He is gaining a firm foundation in an important area of life—he is learning about love.”
The Womanly Art of Breastfeeding, originally published by La Leche League in 1958

Get thinking with today’s breastfeeding quote
Monday, May 17th, 2010Yes, that’s right, breastfeeding is more than milk! I think this quote is rather thought provocative, probably because of the use of the three letter word. But hey, what did you do to get pregnant in the first place? There are moments like this when I feel very prude and I wonder why. The quote does not say that breastfeeding is like having sex, it simply says that there is more to breastfeeding than milk, and more to sex than semen. We can all relate to that, and that is why such a simple comparison can be that powerful. And emotional.
“To reduce breastfeeding to milk is like reducing sex to semen.”
Rachel Myr, Lactnet list facilitator, named “Midwife of the Year 2008″ in Norway, as quoted in Lactnet
What are your thoughts on this?

Breastfeeding quote: will warm you up!
Monday, February 8th, 2010Today’s breastfeeding quote is from Grantly Dick-Read (1890-1959), who is considered to be the father of natural childbirth. He encouraged mothers to give birth with as little medical intervention as possible, educating parents about the benefits of giving birth naturally. Whether a woman gives birth by c-section or not (let’s acknowledge that about a third of American women now give birth by c-section) breastfeeding remains the answer to the three baby’s demands stated below by Grantly Dick-Read. Ain’t that grand?
A newborn baby has only three demands. They are warmth in the arms of its mother, food from her breasts, and security in the knowledge of her presence. Breastfeeding satisfies all three.
~Grantly Dick-Read

A Dreamy Vision by Tolstoy
Monday, January 18th, 2010So peaceful and calm; I’m back with the Monday’s breastfeeding quote. For me, reading this has the effect of stopping the sounds of traffic and all other city noise. Let’s start this week on the right foot !
She pictured a child, her own—like the baby she had seen the day before in the arms of her old nurse’s daughter—at her own breast, with her husband standing by and gazing fondly at her and the child.
—Tolstoy. War and Peace. Book I, part 3, chapter 3
