A pocket guide for American breastfeeding mothers

Friday, June 25th, 2010

Have a look at this! I like it. You can dowload the document and cut and fold it along the lines. I believe it is a great resource, quick and easy to consult, for American moms who will be travelling and nursing in public. One of the best ways to protect ourselves is to be aware of our rights. This document will tell you the regulations about breastmilk transportation by plane and the laws protecting breastfeeding moms in the States. Very useful if you will be visiting family members in an other state this summer. Check it out!

How to answer the question: “Still nursing?”

Friday, May 21st, 2010

Situation:

“I am nursing my one-year-old. We usually nurse at home (in the morning and in the evening because I work during the day), but we do have occasions when we nurse in public, especially the weekends, or in the presence of extended family members. Although I know for myself the health and emotional benefits of extended nursing, I have trouble communicating it to others. What can I say to those who ask about my little one who is “still nursing”?”

You may get that question when your baby is one month old, six months old, 9 months, one year or 2 and a half years old. Answering it without lengthy explanations or getting defensive and snappy is a challenge. Most people are curious and uneducated about breastfeeding. They simply do not know that you can breastfeed past infant age. The trick is to keep it short and not to take it personal. Every nursing mom gets that question.

“How long are you going to nurse him?”

- use humour
1. “Oh, about five more minutes!”
2. “Well, before he leaves for college.”

- be sincere:
1. Smile and say “We’re both really happy with nursing, we’ll stop when one of us will want to”.
2. “As long as we are both comfortable with it” (answer provided by Sonia on Facebook, thanks:))

- cite facts
1. “The average age of weaning worldwide is between two and four years, he is only one”.
2. “The World Health Organization recommends nursing until age two or beyond, he is only one”.

Wonderful Breastfeeding Art: lucky day

Monday, April 12th, 2010

Look at what I found! These breastfeeding drawings were made by a graphic artist who makes a living out of drawing illustrations for magazines. When she had a baby, she became very involved and interested in breastfeeding and she started to draw this series of breasfeeding illustrations. She wanted to keep her name under cover (don’t ask me why!), but she kindly gave me the permission to put up some of her breastfeeding art here. We are lucky! Anyone who has a not-for-profit organization and who would like to promote a breastfeeding-related activity with her illustrations can do so.

Breastfeeding Poem – Dr. Seuss Style

Monday, January 25th, 2010

Here is a very cute breastfeeding advocacy poem  in the Dr. Seuss style of Green Eggs and Ham. It made me smile, let me know if it does the same to you!

Dr. Seuss for Nursing Moms

Would you nurse her in the park?
Would you nurse him in the dark?
Would you nurse him with a Boppy?
And when your boobs are feeling floppy?

I would nurse him in the park,
I would nurse her in the dark.
I’d nurse with or without a Boppy.
Floppy boobs will never stop me.

Can you nurse with your seat belt on?
Can you nurse from dusk till dawn?
Though she may pinch me, bite me, pull,
I will nurse her `till she’s full!

Can you nurse and make some soup?
Can you nurse and feed the group?
It makes her healthy strong and smart,
Mommy’s milk is the best start!

Would you nurse him at the game?
Would you nurse her in the rain?
In front of those who dare complain?
I would nurse him at the game.
I would nurse her in the rain.

As for those who protest lactation,
I have the perfect explanation.
Mommy’s milk is tailor made
It’s the perfect food, you need no aid.

Some may scoff and some may wriggle,
Avert their eyes or even giggle.
To those who can be cruel and rude,
Remind them breast’s the perfect food!

I would never scoff or giggle,
Roll my eyes or even wiggle!
I would not be so crass or crude,
I KNOW that this milk’s the perfect food!

We make the amount we need
The perfect temp for every feed.
There’s no compare to milk from breast-
The perfect food, above the rest.

Those sweet nursing smiles are oh so sweet,
Mommy’s milk is such a treat.
Human milk just can’t be beat.
I will nurse, in any case,
On the street or in your face.

I will not let my baby cry,
I’ll meet her needs, I’ll always try.
It’s not about what’s good for you,
It’s best for babies, through and through.

I will nurse her in my home,
I will nurse her when I roam.
Leave me be lads and ma’am.
I will nurse her, Mom I am.

Provocative Breastfeeding Calendar

Friday, August 28th, 2009

A topless mom is being held by her equally topless partner while nursing her baby, a young mother is wearing a revealing black lace bra and puts make-up on while she has the baby at the breast, various mothers nursing in public… and yes, small bits and bigger bits of breasts showing on the pictures. One breastfeeding picture for each month. The photographs by Denise Burrows Photography and Lisa Scott Photography are simply amazing. The calendar was prepared by the moms who go to the UK Rugby Breastfeeding Cafe. They wanted breastfeeding to look as it is for them: natural and simple. And it does.shapeimage_2

I had a look around the Rugby Breastfeeding Cafe’s website and found this very amusing cake. I am still smiling as I am writing this:

Fake women nursing in public

Tuesday, January 27th, 2009

Is he staring at a breastfeeding woman ?

Is he staring at a breastfeeding woman ?

Marin County in California is the stage of a new campaign promoting breastfeeding in public. Life size photographs of women breastfeeding their child are posted in public spaces, catching the eye of passers by. The idea is that people should not be surprised by seeing women nursing their child in public, as it is perfectly natural and legally protected in the area (as it should be everywhere). ¨When breastfeeding is accepted, it won’t be noticed¨, says every cardboard woman. Thumbs up for the Marin breastfeeding Coalition for putting in place such a great campaign !
