What would you do if you (or someone you know) were asked to leave a public place because you are breastfeeding?

Monday, July 12th, 2010

This is the question INFACT Canada asks on their website and I believe it is a good one to pounder before it happens (and hopefully it won’t!). Knowing your rights will empower you to act if you or someone you know is asked to leave a public place because of breastfeeding.

So, what would you do if you (or someone you know) were asked to leave a public place because you are breastfeeding? Here are the answers provided by INFACT Canada

What are your rights? At INFACT Canada we receive calls every month from women who find themselves in this situation. A public place can be defined as anywhere you go that does not require a personal invitation. If this happens to you there are several possible courses of action. You can:

  • Stand your ground and refuse to leave. Calmly but confidently state your right to feed your infant without discrimination. Unfortunately many new mothers feel intimidated in such situations, and it is often after they have had time to think about what has happened that they wish to respond in some way
  • Lodge a formal complaint with your provincial Human Rights Commission
  • Write to your local community newspapers about the incident
  • Let your local councilor, school trustee, MP and MPP know. Choose the government official connected with the actual place where the incident occurred, for example if you are asked to leave a school setting it would be best to go to the local school trustee with your complaint. If you are unsure start with local councilors and MPPs
  • Contact your local public health unit. They can provide you with suggestions on how to proceed and can probably put you in touch with local breastfeeding networks or coalitions
  • Let INFACT Canada know info@infactcanada.ca. Phone: 416-595-9819
  • Boycott the place where the incident occurred and encourage friends and family to do the same. It is a good idea to let the facility know what you are doing and why

So far, every mother that has lodge a formal complaint has won her case (the cases get publicity and raise the public’s awareness of mothers’ rights, which is really good!).

As the organization says, “one of the obstacles to breastfeeding continues to be concern over whether or not it is acceptable to do so in public. Some women fear offending others if they breastfeed in public places”. My two cents: wearing a nursing top may make you feel a lot more confident when nursing in public. The fear of offending others disappears when you wear one, that’s for sure! If more women felt confident enough to nurse in public, I am convinced that it would have a positive impact on the population in general and that would be less discrimination against nursing mothers. Get out there and nurse in public, ladies! Wear a nursing top to calm your fear (founded or not) of offending others or to feel pretty. Stand your ground, ’cause breastfeeding is a beautiful thing.

Friday, June 4th, 2010

Good morning everyone! Vincent and I will be going to Chicago on Monday, for a big conference about how to improve our online presence as a branded manufacturer. We want to make sure your experience on our website is fantastic, and also work towards our nursing tops brand recognition. This should help our amazing retailers too!

So just in case you wonder why I do not write as much next week, don’t worry, I’ll be back on Monday June 14th.

New Momzelle Nursing Tops Have Arrived!

Tuesday, April 6th, 2010

Shop the new Momzelle nursing tops styles and colours

Shop our newest selection of Momzelle nursing tops online. They arrived early last week and they are already selling very fast. Hurry to get the style and size you want before it is too late! This may sound like a cheesy selling argument, but believe me, it is no joke. Just think of the speed at which the nursing hoody in berry was gone! We now only have it in XS and XL. The new styles are available in extra-small, small, medium, large, extra-large and even, due to the high demand, in extra-extra-large. Each one of us should feel pretty and good while breastfeeding in public!

I love the new pictures that are up on the website. You can see what the top would really look like on you. I swear no one will know you are wearing a nursing top, even in your mommy groups.

Nursing nightgown

I think the nursing nightgown is very pretty, with its cute fushia lettuce edge finish at the sleeve and at the bottom hem. It comes in black/with fushia trim and navy/with fushia trim. You can wear this one at the hospital, back home while you rest and not only can you feel pretty every night in bed with your partner, you can also feel good if anyone stops by for a surprise visit. They won’t believe you have just given birth.

Belly Band/ Nursing Band

Also new, we have a Momzelle belly/nursing band. This one I like because you can wear it during and after your pregnancy. It makes a very nice baby shower gift too if you do not know if the mom will nurse or not, because whatever happens, she will be able to wear this belly band. Simply wear it under your regular clothing. When pregnant, it covers your bump and covers the space between the end of your t-shirt and the beginning of your pants (the band will come down to your hips).

After birth, you can wear it a little higher, all the way to under your breasts (actually, a friend of mine wore hers as a night bra, her breasts had overgrown her bras and she needed something to hold her nursing pads- and sometimes cabbage leaves – in place). This way, when you need to nurse, you simply lift your shirt and your belly, sides and back are covered.

All right, I do not think this is as good as a nursing top (the nursing top is less bulky and covers also your other breast while you nurse), but I do believe it makes a good – and price sensitive – alternative to it. Plus, nursing or not, I think this should be part of every woman’s wardrobe (mommy or not). I HATE it when I’m sitting and you can see my bum. This belly band completely solves the problem.

5 things to consider before buying a nursing top

Friday, June 26th, 2009

Let’s imagine that you already want a nursing top, in order to feel confident while nursing in public. There are many brands and types of nursing openings out there. How will you choose which one is right for you? Here are a few things to look for when you want to buy a nursing top.

1. Ease of use

This is probably the most important criteria: a nursing opening that is easy to use. The opening itself should be large enough for your baby to open a wide mouth and have a good latch on your breast. You should also be able to access it one-handed (buttons and zippers make the task harder, they delay the access to the breast, and I would personally be afraid of hurting the baby). Nursing tops with vertical slits can be odd, as there may not be enough space for the baby to latch on even after you’ve stretched the fabric.

2. Privacy

Make sure the nursing top insures your privacy. Unlike baby blankets or nursing covers, nursing tops will not be kicked off by your little one’s feet and hands. Nevertheless, you have to make sure it will not burst open when you do not want it to. Any nursing opening that you lift protects you from that.

3. Stretch

A higher quality garment will contain spandex or Lycra, which allow the fabric to stretch and take back its shape. It is important to have that if you want the top last and still look good after a few washes. Nursing tops are meant to be used a lot!

4. Lenght

Is the nursing top long enough to cover your tummy ? Above the issue of not showing any bare breast skin, most mothers are concerned with not showing their newly gained stretch marks. Beware of short nursing tops, who would only do half the work needed. Also, for tall mothers, longer nursing tops are available.

5. Style

You do not have to look like a bag because you nurse: fitted and fashionable nursing tops do exist. You should look as good as you feel after you’ve had your baby. If you were to buy only one nursing top, I would recommend one that you will be able to wear over and over (forget the leopard full body print). A black v-neck tee and a black tank top are easy to dress up and easy to wear.

Momzelle Nursing Tops with the Celebrities

Wednesday, June 24th, 2009

Great news ! Stephanie from Celebrity Baby Blog just published a fresh review of Momzelle nursing tops. Here is what she has to say (or you can read it directly on Celebrity Baby Blog by clicking here):

Momzelle Nursing Tops: They’ve Got You Covered

Sick of having to show your belly to the world whenever your little one needs to nurse? So don’t.

Momzelle Nursing Tops (starting at $45) make it easy to keep everything covered, even with a hungry baby in your arms.

Made of super soft and stretchy organic cotton, Momzelle nursing tops are designed with an opening across the bust (see the picture) so that you can just lift up the top portion of your shirt and move your bra aside for instant access. No bunching shirt to get in the way of baby nursing… and, more importantly, no unwanted exposure of your belly. They’re also great for breastfeeding while babywearing!

The shirts are generously sized to accommodate a post-partum figure, and the fit is flattering and comfortable. Another nice bonus? The prices are lower than some other nursing tops on the market.

I tested the pretty Hummingbird Tee and have been pleasantly surprised by both the incredible comfort of the cotton and the compliments I’ve received while wearing it. So not only is it easier to nurse with Momzelle tops… you’ll also look great doing it. A win-win situation, if you ask me (or my daughter!).

Thursday, January 29th, 2009

That’s it ! Our new website is on. It is not perfect, that’s for sure (one of the main problems being that the shopping cart empties when you click outside of the shopping window), but we are very proud to have a new section with photos of moms wearing Momzelle nursing tops.  They are beautiful ! Have a look, click on this link: http://www.momzelle.com/momzphotos.html

Thank you so much for all the moms who sent their photos !

More pictures will be added as we receive them by email. Do you have a picture that you’d like to send us ? Please do so ! Send it to  ¨info at momzelle dot com¨

Have a great day everyone (snif, I know almost no one will read this, as I am only testing my ability to write a blog regularly. I am starting to enjoy this, and I wish we will make a deal out of it soon !).

A new face for Momzelle

Tuesday, December 16th, 2008

Hello All, Momzelle will soon have a new look, as we are working on a new version of our website (www.momzelle.com). There will be more space, more air to breathe, and oh-what-fun a new page filled with pictures of real moms wearing Momzelle designs.  Hopefully the new version will be up and running in January. One thing is sure, it is going to be really great and satisfying for all the team to finally see the faces of Momzelle momz. I just love receiving those pictures, it reminds me of how small and cute babies are, as well as how beautiful breastfeeding can be.

New nursing tops for a better beginning

Friday, September 12th, 2008

I was asked today why we chose, at Momzelle breastfeeding apparel, to manufacture our clothing in North America, in a fairtrade certified factory. We chose to do so because we believe in a better world, where workers do not work 14 hours a day, are not paid unfair wages and in a world where kids do not have to go to work in the morning. We believe in good working conditions, in fair wages, not in child labor. We want to be able to really “know” what’s going on in our factories, unlike some other big manufacturers. After reading about the poor workers’ conditions in China, Bangladesh, Pakistan and other countries, we decided to make a decision that would contribute to a better world for our children. Momzelle’s shirts are not sewn by children in thirld-world countries and are sweat-shop free. Guaranteed.
